Mathematics

To ensure all students have equal opportunity to succeed, Oregon has adopted core standards in Mathematics K-12.  The process involved parents, teachers and business people from across the state.  These content standards clearly delineate what every student should know and be able to do at each grade level.

By starting with the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics Focal Points, the Oregon Mathematics Content Panel made a conscious decision to focus instruction on the key elements that allow students to succeed as life long users of mathematics.  By using these national focal points as a starting point, a step was also taken to provide some consistency across the nation.

The state has taken steps to ensure students are prepared to continue the education beyond high school by making high school graduation a testament to meeting rigorous academic goals.  In mathematics, the graduating class of 2014 will need to have completed three years of mathematics at or beyond an initial course in Algebra I.   Additionally, in order to graduate a student will need to pass a state approved assessment.

At the same time the state was developing the mathematics standards and new graduation requirements, 4J's Math Task Force was looking at how district teachers could best serve our students by improving the access, curriculum, learning, teaching, assessment and use of appropriate technology.

It became clear to the Task Force that Algebra acts as a gate keeper for students in pursuing higher mathematics courses as well as courses in the physical and social sciences.  Built into the Task Force Recommendations is a strengthening of the preparation for Algebra in the lower grades and a strengthening of the rigor of district Algebra 1 classes to give students a better opportunity to move past Algebra 1 and into the more advanced mathematics required in further courses.

4J now has in place core standards in mathematics at each grade level that promote rigorous mathematical thinking and gives students the necessary background to take a high school Algebra course by eighth grade.

These core standards are articulated in the table below.

This chart shows the grade-by-grade progression in the core standards.  It outlines a coherent

progression in knowledge and skills from Kindergarten through Grade 8/Algebra I.  The high school core standards will continue this progression.
