Student Survey About Bullying and Harassment
A message from George Russell, 4J Superintendent, and
Laurie Moses, Director of Secondary Education, April 2010
Bullying and harassment among youth are a serious concern across the United States. National and local data show both that bullying and harassment are common in schools, and that such incidents can have a significant impact on the students involved. A few cases have even led to tragic consequences such as suicides.
Eugene School District 4J is committed to creating schools with a positive social climate, which makes school more rewarding for students and allows them to focus on academic demands. To that end, students at 4J middle schools and high schools will be asked this spring to complete a brief survey about bullying and harassment.
What is the survey for?
This survey will help us understand how students perceive bullying and harassment in 4J schools. Survey responses will be used to consider changes schools could make to improve the social climate and overall school experience, helping to ensure that 4J schools are safe and welcoming for all students. The survey will not be used to evaluate individual students, schools or staff members.
What is in the survey?
The survey will ask students about whether they have experienced, observed or participated in a variety of bullying or harassing behaviors. The survey contains frank language about bullying and harassment, including examples of slang terms that some may find offensive.
Optional and anonymous
While participation is encouraged, the survey will be optional — students or their parents may choose not to participate. If a parent or guardian wishes to have a student excused from taking the survey, he or she should contact the principal. Students who wish to opt out may simply say, “I don’t want to do the survey,” at the time the survey is given. Students taking the survey also may choose not to respond to specific questions they don’t want to answer. All survey responses from those who do participate will be completely anonymous.
Our goal is to continually improve the educational and social climate our schools provide for your student and his or her peers. If you have any questions or wish to review a copy of the survey, please contact the principal of your school.
