Now Accepting In-District and Out-of-District Transfer Requests

School choice tours and activities Feb. 27–Mar. 2

The Eugene School District is accepting in-district school choice and out-of-district transfer requests for 2012–13. Families who live in 4J may choose their school, and those who live outside of 4J may transfer to the district, provided there is an opening available. Requests will be granted in an order determined by lottery.

Parents are invited to visit schools before submitting a request. Schools will offer tours and activities during the week of Feb. 27–Mar. 2 (schedule of activities).

Common Schedule at High Schools

Work group will recommend new schedule

To support student learning in our high schools and increase operational efficiency, 4J is working to develop a common schedule for all its high schools.

Having a common schedule for all four high schools would be:

  • More fair. Students’ learning opportunities and time expectations for teachers would be more equitable.
  • More efficient. Having four different schedules in our high schools creates operational inefficiencies, increases costs, and makes it difficult to share staff between schools.
  • Better for students. Students would be better able to access courses at other high school campuses, Lane Community College and the University of Oregon, as well as virtual classes offered at a set time. Changing schools would be much easier for students who move, especially when the transition is mid-year.

A work group has been formed and will make a schedule recommendation to the superintendent at the end of February. The district then will seek public input via two public forums (March 5 & March 7) and an online survey.

School Building Assessment Underway

Results will guide future decisions on facility improvements

4J is getting an outside perspective on the quality of its school buildings. The district’s schools are 57 years old on average, apart from four schools built in the 2000s.

With limited resources, the district must be strategic about investing in renovations to better support learning. An outside firm will assess 4J's school buildings and provide the data needed to make smart choices about prioritizing improvements.
