When Should My Child Start School?
In this school district, children who are at least 5 years old by September 1 of the school year are eligible to attend kindergarten.
What School Will My Child Attend?
Which School District? Do you live within 4J's boundaries? If you are not sure, you can look online or call 541-790-7571 for boundary information.
The district spans 155 square miles in the southern Willamette Valley, including
the town of Coburg and a small part of Linn County to the north. About
85 percent of the City of Eugene lies inside 4J’s boundaries, but the northwest area of Eugene is part of the Bethel School District. The student's custodial parent or guardian must reside within the Eugene School
District boundaries before enrolling, applying for transfers or
applying to alternative schools. Exchanges
between school districts are done by lottery, for which applications
must be received by May 7, 2010, for the 2010–11 school year.

Which Neighborhood School? Every residence within 4J's boundaries is connected to a school at the elementary, middle and high school level. Most families choose to have their children attend their neighborhood schools, which offer many advantages. To learn which schools are your neighborhood schools, click on "Find My School" at left or call 541-790-7571.
School Choice: For more information on all the schools in our district, see the 4J Schools Guide (downloadable PDF) or the School Information section of this Web site. If you decide a different program is best for your child, transfers between neighborhood schools and entry into alternative
schools is possible as space is available. If you have questions about school choice, please call 541-790-7553.
How Do I Enroll My Child in Our Neighborhood School?
You may enroll your child in your neighborhood school at any time. We suggest you start by getting to know
your neighborhood school during the school visitation weeks in January
or February or kindergarten registration week in April, or call to
schedule a
visit.
There are many advantages to enrolling your child in your
neighborhood school. Each neighborhood school is unique, but all
emphasize developing strong educational programs that reflect the needs
and interests of children and families in their area. Every neighborhood
school strives to constantly improve the overall educational
experience, including student performance on state tests, exposure to
specialist teachers, extracurricular activities, and parent and
community involvement. The principal at your neighborhood school can
share the school’s improvement goals for the year and tell you more
about each program’s strengths.
When you are ready to enroll your child in your neighborhood school, you may begin by picking up an enrollment packet at the school or printing many of the required forms from this Web site. The enrollment forms listed below are a starting point; not all of the forms will apply to you, and your child's school may require additional forms and information before the enrollment process can be completed.
How Do I Enroll My Child in a Different School?
You may transfer to a different neighborhood school, or to one of the district's alternative schools, if you feel
it better meets your child’s needs, you can provide transportation, and there is space available at the
school. Every district school has been encouraged to build upon its unique
strengths and to develop innovative programs to meet student needs. No
matter which school you choose, your child will receive an excellent
education.
An open enrollment period is held each year; for the 2010–11 school year this period is January 4–March 19, 2010. When schools have limited openings, students are accepted based on a lottery. To learn more about school choice and to download a school choice request form during the open enrollment period, go to http://www.4j.lane.edu/choice.
