4J's 2009–10 general fund
budget totals $148.6
million — $20.1 million less than the 2008–09 adopted budget.
Schools
across Oregon are facing severe budget shortfalls this
year as state tax revenues slide downward. While the Eugene School District has tried to keep cuts as far away from the classroom as possible, painful reductions cannot be avoided. 4J's budget-balancing strategies for 2009–10 include:
- Employee compensation — licensed, classified and administrative employee groups agreed to share the sacrifice, saving the district $3 million
- Reducing central office administrative positions and budgets, saving $4 million
- Eliminating 38 teaching positions (FTE)
- Decreasing high school athletics costs, primarily by reducing travel
- Trimming supply budgets for schools and departments
- Postponing new math textbooks and materials
- Drawing down reserves and contingency funds
Additional budget reductions are expected in 2010–11.
