The start of the new school year is just around the corner—we can hardly wait! • Wed., Sept. 6: First day of school for kindergartners and students in grades 6 and 9 • Thursday., Sept. 7: First day of school for grades 1–5, 7–8 and 10–12
While kids are packing their backpacks, planning first-day outfits and enjoying the last few days of summer, here are 14 easy things parents can do to get ready for your student’s first day.
Enroll Your New Student: If you have a child who will be new to a 4J school this year and is not yet registered, please contact your school or the district registrar as soon as possible. How to enroll
Mark Your Calendar: School begins just after Labor Day and ends in mid-June. See the full calendar for winter break, spring break and other days when students will be out of school. 2023–24 school calendar
Review School Start & End Times: 4J schools have consistent calendars, schedules and early release days, so that students get enough and equal learning time, families experience consistent school schedules, and staff have coordinated collaboration time. There are two major changes starting this year. Early release days will move to Wednesdays from Fridays for all grades. In addition, high school schedules will move to a semester system built around four class periods a day (with a different schedule on early release Wednesdays). School start and dismissal schedules | New high school schedule information Make Your Bus Plan. Check your bus stop, and pickup and dropoff times. Schedules change every year. Questions? Contact your school office or call 541-790-7474 (option 4). BONUS: All students ride free on the city bus (aka LTD). Get a free LTD bus pass from your school office. Some elementary schools may suggest that students bring a personal backpack and water bottle. For middle and high schools, please refer to the school supply lists. 2023–24 school supply lists Eat for Free! All 4J students can eat breakfast and lunch at no cost during the 2023–24 school year. Families don’t need to do anything to receive free student meals. However, families whose students attend certain schools are encouraged to apply for the state's free meal subsidy to help reduce the district's cost for this important program, and get other savings. School meal information / Help your school. Apply today! Brush Up on COVID-19 Protocols: Masks are optional—either way is OK! COVID-19 vaccines and boosters are readily available and encouraged, but not required. 4J will offer free rapid testing onsite at all schools for students who develop symptoms. Prior parent consent is required for each test and forms are available at all schools. We are again partnering with the Oregon Health Authority and the University of Oregon to offer free weekly testing to all 4J students during the 2022–23 school year. Check Up on Student Health: Make sure you’re on track with required immunizations and medical examinations (including sports physicals)—both available from 4J’s school-based health centers. Students must meet routine immunization requirements to attend school, such as measles and pertussis. COVID-19 vaccines are readily available and encouraged, but not required. Mental health support is available. If your child has any special health issues, be in contact with your school well before classes begin. Contact your child's school nurse if you have questions. Update Emergency Contact Info: Does your school have your current phone number and email address so we can reach you quickly during an emergency and keep you up-to-date about what is happening at school? Be sure to add your cell phone designated as a mobile number, so you can receive important information via text message. Update your contact information and emergency contacts in ParentVUE or with your school office. Check information in ParentVUE Get Ready for Kindergarten: We're excited to welcome our new kindergarteners to school on September 7! Kindergarten is a full-day program in 4J. All elementary schools start the first week of school with “Kinderzone,” a child-centered and welcoming introduction to set our new students up for school success. For some suggested steps to help your child get ready for kindergarten, view the Kindergarten Handbook, available online or at your school. Kindergarten Handbook (y en español) Grades K–5: Download the Seesaw Parent and Family App. If you have a student enrolled in elementary school, you can use Seesaw Parent and Family in your web browser or mobile app to securely access your student’s information. Through the Seesaw Parent and Family app you can view and communicate with your student’s teachers. Your school can provide additional information needed to set up an account if you do not already have one. Seesaw Parent and Family / Apple iOS app / Android app / Need help? Grades 6–12: Download the Canvas & ParentVue Apps. If you have a student enrolled in middle school or high school, you can use Canvas and ParentVue in your web browser or mobile app to securely access your student's information. Through Canvas you can view course assignments and grade progress and communicate with your student's teachers. With ParentVue, you can check attendance, review class schedules, view their mid-term and final grades, and more. Your student can provide you with their Canvas pairing code, and your school can provide a ParentVue activation key (and a Canvas pairing code if needed) to set up an account if you do not already have one.
