Compensation is available only if the personal property was on District property or at a District-sponsored event at the time of the theft* or damage and if one or more of the following conditions also exists:
New personal property items are covered for full replacement cost if the property was purchased new within the last five years when stolen or damaged.
Used items, or items purchased more than five years prior to the theft* or damage, are covered for cash-value reimbursement.
Remember, for items valued at more than $500, coverage is available only if they are approved by the school principal, or if they are stolen or damaged as a result of District negligence.
Replacement or cash value costs are not provided for the following:
Theft of, or damage to, personal vehicles while parked on District property, unless there is material evidence that the damage was caused by District negligence. (Note that your personal auto coverage is always primary and District coverage is secondary, even when your vehicle is being used for District business.)
Theft of, or damage to, personal property that is not directly related to instructional purposes (e.g., purses, wallets, office wall decorations, etc.), unless the District is negligent.
Theft of property if reimbursement for the theft is covered by a pre-existing formal agreement between the school district and the property owner. In such cases, reimbursement will be made in accordance with the terms and conditions of the pre-existing agreement.
Theft of, or damage to, any personal property related to instructional purposes and valued at $500 or more, which has not been registered with, and approved by, the building principal.
*In the context of this information, the words “theft” and “stolen” both refer to an incident when an item is taken without permission from the rightful owner.
