4J Staff Personal Property Loss & Damage: What is Covered

Compensation is available only if the personal property was on District property or at a District-sponsored event at the time of the theft* or damage and if one or more of the following conditions also exists:

  • Personal property items are stolen or damaged as a result of District negligence.
  • Personal property items with a value of $500 or less were being used for purposes related to the employee’s instructional responsibilities at the time of the theft or damage.
  • Personal property items with a value over $500 were being used for purposes related to the employee’s instructional responsibilities at the time of the theft or damage and were properly documented.
  • Coverages for damaged or stolen personal property are the same as standard District coverages. If a stolen or damaged item is not covered under the District property policy, your personal property would not be covered either.

Personal Property That Is Covered

New personal property items are covered for full replacement cost if the property was purchased new within the last five years when stolen or damaged.

Used items, or items purchased more than five years prior to the theft* or damage, are covered for cash-value reimbursement.

Remember, for items valued at more than $500, coverage is available only if they are approved by the school principal, or if they are stolen or damaged as a result of District negligence.

Personal Property That Is Not Covered

Replacement or cash value costs are not provided for the following:

Theft of, or damage to, personal vehicles while parked on District property, unless there is material evidence that the damage was caused by District negligence. (Note that your personal auto coverage is always primary and District coverage is secondary, even when your vehicle is being used for District business.)

Theft of, or damage to, personal property that is not directly related to instructional purposes (e.g., purses, wallets, office wall decorations, etc.), unless the District is negligent.

Theft of property if reimbursement for the theft is covered by a pre-existing formal agreement between the school district and the property owner. In such cases, reimbursement will be made in accordance with the terms and conditions of the pre-existing agreement.

Theft of, or damage to, any personal property related to instructional purposes and valued at $500 or more, which has not been registered with, and approved by, the building principal.

*In the context of this information, the words “theft” and “stolen” both refer to an incident when an item is taken without permission from the rightful owner.
