State Tests: Opting Out

State Tests: Opting Out

Under Oregon law, a parent or student age 18+ may opt out of Oregon’s annual statewide math and language arts assessments by filling out an annual opt-out form, which starting this year can be submitted online. Exemptions from the English language proficiency (for students whose primary language is not English) or science tests may also be requested based on a student’s disability or religious beliefs.

Opting Out of English Language Arts and/or Math State Assessments

Online Form: Click a link below to fill out and submit an online form in the preferred language to request that your child opt out English language arts and/or math state assessments during spring of 2025. Please read the form carefully. You will have the option to receive a copy of this form via email when you submit it. Once your form has been submitted, your child will not be able to access the state assessments without written request to revoke the opt-out request.

Paper Form: Click a link below to download, print and sign the opt-out form in the preferred language. IMPORTANT: If you do not submit an online form, you must return the completed paper forms to your school office.

Requesting an Exemption from English Language Proficiency and/or Science Assessments

Parents, guardians and adult students may request an exemption from taking the English Language Proficiency Assessment (ELPA) or science state assessment. State rules allow parents, guardians or emancipated minors to request an exemption from testing based on a student’s disability or religion. Unlike the opt-out process for math and English language arts, requests for exemptions for these tests must satisfy the following conditions:

  1. Be submitted in writing to the district (there is no standardized form)
  2. Include reasons for request (disability or religion)
  3. Propose an alternative learning activity for the student
  4. Subject to district review and determination whether to approve

Click the following links to submit a request an exemption for:

  • Science (forthcoming)
  • English Language Proficiency Assessment (forthcoming)

Alternately, you can fill out, print and sign this exemption request template. You must return the completed and signed form to your school’s front office.
