High Schools
All high schools in the district administer the Oregon Statewide Assessment System (OSAS) assessments. Depending on their programming, some high schools may administer additional assessments. For example, students enrolled in the Eugene International High School may take additional International Baccalaureate exams. Occasionally a high school will learn their 12th grade classes have been selected to participate in the National Assessment of Educational Progress. All high school students who are labeled as English Learners must take an annual assessment of their English language proficiency.
Graduation Planning Assessments
PSAT and PreACT
Every October, the PSAT is offered to all students in 10th grade. Beginning in the 2023-24 school year, the state contract changes from PSAT to PreACT, but 11th grade students may still take the PSAT in order to qualify for the National Merit Scholarship. Student scores on this college-readiness assessment are used to guide students and counselors in the creation of their student plans toward graduation and college readiness.
Seals of Biliteracy and Multiliteracy
The Oregon State Seals of Biliteracy and Multiliteracy recognize high school graduates who have attained a high level of proficiency in reading, writing, listening, and speaking in two (Seal of Biliteracy) or more than two (Seal of Multiliteracy) world languages.
According to OAR 581-021-0582, the purposes of the State Seal of Biliteracy are
- To encourage students to study languages
- To certify attainment of Biliteracy
- To provide employers with a method of identifying people with language and Biliteracy skills
- To provide post-secondary institutions with a method to recognize and give academic credit to applicants seeking admission
- To prepare students to be college and career ready
- To recognize and promote world language instruction in public schools
- To strengthen intergroup relationships, affirm the value of diversity, and honor the multiple cultures and languages of the community
STAMP
Students enrolled in one of the district’s language immersion programs (Chinese, French, Japanese, Spanish) take the Avant STAMP™ (STAndards-based Measurement of Proficiency) language test in 3rd, 5th, and 8th grade. In addition, scores on the STAMP may be used by high school students to satisfy one of the requirements for the Oregon Seal of Biliteracy or Multiliteracy.
GED
4J’s GED program, housed in the Lane Community College Downtown Center, provides another option for student success. Staff provide instructional support and study materials needed to earn a GED. Testing takes place off-site and at flexible times during the day.
State Summative Tests
OSAS (“State Tests”)
Although they are only one measure of academic success, state test results provide important information for students, families, teachers, schools, and districts. The Elementary and Secondary Education Act (currently called ESSA, or Every Student Succeeds Act) requires all states receiving federal funds for schools to show that all students are learning. States show this by testing students beginning in 3rd grade. These summative assessment results show the federal government and the Oregon Department of Education how well all students are performing according to state standards in Math, English Language Arts (reading and writing, or ELA), and Science. When a school district’s results drop below a certain threshold, the Oregon Department of Education will step in to offer support. The goal of this accountability model is to help all students succeed in school.
Each spring, 11th grade students test in Math and ELA, and Science. Students and families can practice taking these tests here.
Though the federal government requires that 95% of enrolled students take these tests, students or families in Oregon can choose to opt out of OSAS Math and ELA tests. To “opt out” of OSAS science tests, families must submit a written exemption request on the basis of accommodating a student’s disability or religious beliefs.
Chinese (Traditional), Chinese (Simplified), Vietnamese, Russian, German, French, Tagalog, Japanese, Korean, Arabic
