Runners participating in the second annual 5K for 4J & Fun Run, Roll & Stroll fundraiser benefiting 4J students at Alton Baker Park on Saturday, October 14, will have a pacesetter of epic proportions: the Moon.

Prior to the start of the runs, organized by the Eugene Education Foundation, the Moon will begin passing in front of the Sun during an event known as an annular eclipse. At 9:18 a.m., the smaller Moon will block out all but the outer ring of our closest star, an event known as annularity where the "ring of fire" is visible, weather permitting. If the weather is cloudy, there still will be a noticeable dimming of the sky during this celestial event.

Outreach educators from Eugene Science Center will hold eclipse-related educational activities prior to the runs at 9 a.m. Free eclipse viewing glasses, which must be worn at all times to safely view the eclipse, will be included in registration packets for all 5k for 4J/Fun Run participants.

The fun run and 5K begins at 10 a.m. and 10:30 a.m., respectively. Participants must register in advance; online registration is available here. Proceeds will be distributed by EEF as classroom grants to benefit the the academic learning and social growth of 4J students. This will definitely be a run to remember!

Los corredores participantes en la segunda edición anual de la divertida carrera para recaudación de fondos 5K para 4J y Fun Run, Roll & Stroll en beneficio de los estudiantes del 4J en Alton Baker Park el Sábado 14 de octubre, tendrán un referente de proporciones épicas: la luna.

Previo al inicio de las carreras, organizadas por la Fundación de Educación de Eugene, la luna comenzará a pasar frente al sol durante un evento conocido como eclipse anular. A las 9:18 a.m. la luna, siendo más pequeña, bloqueará todo menos el anillo exterior de nuestra estrella más cercana, un evento conocido como anularidad donde el "anillo de fuego" es visible, si el clima lo permite. Si el tiempo está nublado, todavía habrá un oscurecimiento notable del cielo durante este evento celestial.

Educadores de extensión del Centro de Ciencias Eugene llevarán a cabo actividades educativas relacionadas con el eclipse antes de las carreras a las 9 a.m. Se incluirán anteojos gratuitos para ver el eclipse, que deben usarse en todo momento para ver el eclipse de manera segura, en los paquetes de inscripción para todos los participantes de la carrera 5k for 4J/Fun Run.

La carrera divertida y la carrera de 5 km comienzan a las 10 a.m. y 10:30 a.m., respectivamente. Los participantes deben registrarse con antelación; el registro en línea está disponible aquí.
