Overhaul of central office will provide more resources to school buildings, streamline executive team

Superintendent Andy Dey has announced a significant overhaul of 4J’s district-level operations that reaffirms our commitment to 4J’s simple but powerful mission: Put our students first.

The central office reorganization has three main components:

• Teachers on special assignment (TOSAs) will be shifting from itinerant staff to each working in an assigned school, helping reinstate support systems that boost students’ academic learning and reduce behavior that disrupts learning. The additional trained adult in schools will provide unique supports based on the needs of the building with the ongoing support of a network of their peers across the district.
• Student services administrators will be reassigned from the district office to working in school buildings, providing direct day-to-day on-site support that will help align our general education initiatives with our special education and other student service programs.
• The executive team at the district office will be streamlined so that it’s both simplified and more narrowly focused on the work that will positively impact our students and families.

We are in a very different place than we were three years ago. Student enrollment continues to decline and pandemic-related federal emergency aid is coming to an end, sapping our district of vital funding. At the same time, the daily needs in our schools continue to grow as students grapple with pandemic-related learning loss, behavioral challenges and unsettled home lives. Feedback from students, staff and families overwhelmingly identified a need to prioritize district resources closer to our students. 

The district’s reorganization, implemented over the summer in time for the start of the 2023–24 school year, is an important and significant step to put our students first.

El superintendente Andy Dey ha anunciado una revisión significativa de las operaciones a nivel del distrito 4J que reafirma nuestro compromiso con la simple pero poderosa misión del 4J: Poner a nuestros estudiantes primero.

La reorganización de la oficina central tiene tres componentes principales:

• Maestros en asignación especial (TOSA) cambiarán de personal itinerante a cada uno siendo asignado a trabajar en una escuela específica, ayudando así a restablecer los sistemas de apoyo que impulsan el aprendizaje académico de los estudiantes y reducen el comportamiento que interrumpe el aprendizaje. El maestro capacitado adicional en las escuelas brindará apoyos únicos en función de las necesidades del edificio con el apoyo continuo de una red de sus compañeros en todo el distrito.
• Administradores de servicios estudiantiles serán reubicados de la oficina del distrito para trabajar en edificios escolares asignados, brindando apoyo diario directo en el sitio que ayudará a alinear nuestras iniciativas de educación general con nuestra educación especial y otros programas de servicios estudiantiles.
• El equipo ejecutivo en la oficina del distrito se optimizará para que se simplifique y se centre más estrechamente en el trabajo que tendrá un impacto positivo en nuestros estudiantes y familias.

Estamos en un lugar muy diferente al que estábamos hace tres años. La matrícula de estudiantes continúa disminuyendo y la ayuda federal de emergencia relacionada con la pandemia está llegando a su fin, lo que agota los fondos vitales de nuestro distrito. Al mismo tiempo, las necesidades diarias en nuestras escuelas continúan creciendo a medida que los estudiantes lidian con la pérdida de aprendizaje relacionada con la pandemia, las dificultades de comportamiento y las vidas familiares inestables. Los comentarios de los estudiantes, el personal y las familias identificaron abrumadoramente la necesidad de priorizar los recursos del distrito más cerca de nuestros estudiantes.
