High Schools to Shift to Semesters, New Schedule

Students will take eight classes a semester, attending four classes a day on alternating days starting in fall 2023

Following several months of team work, involving input from parents, students, teachers and high school staff, district leadership has selected a new high school schedule.

Beginning in fall 2023, 4J high schools will operate on a 2 semester x 4 class A/B/C day schedule. This means that there will be two semesters with eight classes per semester. Four classes will be held twice a week on alternating days (A/B), with a flexible day (C) one day a week.

How we got here: In September, a collaborative team of teachers, licensed specialists and district leaders embarked on a process to evaluate schedules against the following set of values:

• Develop a schedule that first prioritizes SpEd and ELL services. Student receiving interventions can access electives. Students receiving SpEd and ELL services need time in their schedule that allows them to receive services without sacrificing the ability to access electives. They are not forced to trade opportunity to receive services. (i.e., flex period)
• Allow flexibility within schedule for student access to affinity groups, enrichment/ extensions, interventions. Similar to the need identified for students receiving SpEd and ELL services, student members of affinity groups need time in their schedule that allows them to regularly meet without sacrificing the ability to access electives. They are not forced to trade elective opportunities for structured activities to increase belonging (i.e., flex period).
• Increase planning and collaboration time. Teachers and school staff need time built into the daily/weekly schedule that provides opportunity for meaningful collaboration.  These times are not in addition, or prior to, the actual workday.
• Schedule that promotes positive relationships for students and staff.
• Maintain or decrease class size. Class size remains a concern, and shouldn’t be negatively impacted by this schedule change.

At the beginning of December that team forwarded four recommended schedule options to the district leadership team for final review and selection. Following the review of staff, parents and student input, alignment with the articulated goals, coupled with a fiscal impact review, district leadership selected the 2 x 4 A/B/C from the recommendations as the schedule that most closely met the goals and needs of our system.

This new schedule will provide students with the greatest number of opportunities to obtain credits, balances class length with homework expectations, provides flexibility to all students so that interventions do not have to come at the expense of electives or participation in affinity groups and enrichment courses. It further increases teacher preparation and planning time throughout the week and has a minimal impact on existing class sizes.

No one schedule is the definitive solution to student success. That said, we believe that this schedule option will help us maximize impact, specifically for the student groups identified as historically marginalized.

Las preparatorias cambiarán a semestres, nuevos horarios

Los estudiantes tomarán ocho clases por semestre, tomarán cuatro clases por día con días alternados

Después de varios meses de trabajo en equipo, con aportes de padres, estudiantes, maestros y personal de preparatoria, el liderazgo del distrito ha seleccionado un horario de preparatoria nuevo.

A partir del otoño de 2023, las preparatorias 4J operarán en un horario de 2 semestres x 4 clases A/B/C. Esto significa que habrá dos semestres con ocho clases por semestre. Se impartirán cuatro clases dos veces por semana en días alternos (A/B), con una jornada flexible (C) un día a la semana.

Cómo llegamos aquí: en septiembre, un equipo colaborativo de maestros, especialistas licenciados y líderes del distrito se embarcó en un proceso para evaluar los horarios con el siguiente conjunto de valores:

• Desarrollar un horario que priorice primero los servicios de Educación Especial y ELL. Los estudiantes que reciben intervenciones pueden acceder a materias optativas. Los estudiantes que reciben servicios de Educación Especial y ELL necesitan tiempo en su horario que les permita recibir servicios sin sacrificar la capacidad de acceder a materias optativas. Así no están forzados a intercambiar oportunidades para poder recibir servicios. (es decir, período flexible)
• Permitir la flexibilidad dentro del horario para que los estudiantes accedan a grupos de afinidad, enriquecimiento/extensiones, intervenciones. Similar a la necesidad identificada para los estudiantes que reciben servicios de educación especial y ELL, los estudiantes miembros de grupos de afinidad necesitan tiempo en su horario que les permita reunirse regularmente sin sacrificar la capacidad de acceder a materias optativas. No están obligados a intercambiar oportunidades electivas para aumentar la pertenencia por actividades estructuradas (es decir, período flexible).
• Aumentar el tiempo de planificación y colaboración. Los maestros y el personal de la escuela necesitan tiempo incorporado en el horario diario/semanal que brinde la oportunidad de una colaboración significativa. Estos tiempos no son adicionales ni anteriores a la jornada laboral real.
• Horario que promueva relaciones positivas entre los estudiantes y el personal.
• Mantener o disminuir el tamaño de la clase. El tamaño de la clase sigue siendo una preocupación y no debería verse afectado negativamente por este cambio de horario.

A principios de diciembre, el equipo de horario envió cuatro opciones de horarios recomendados al equipo de liderazgo del distrito para su revisión y selección final. Luego de la revisión del personal, los padres y los aportes de los estudiantes, la alineación con las metas articuladas, junto con una revisión del impacto fiscal, el liderazgo del distrito seleccionó el 2 x 4 A/B/C de las recomendaciones como el programa que mejor cumplió con las metas y necesidades de nuestro sistema.

Este nuevo horario brindará a los estudiantes la mayor cantidad de oportunidades para obtener créditos, equilibra la duración de la clase con las expectativas de tareas, brinda flexibilidad a todos los estudiantes para que las intervenciones no tengan que realizarse a expensas de las materias optativas o la participación en grupos de afinidad y cursos de enriquecimiento. Aumenta aún más la preparación de los maestros y el tiempo de planificación durante la semana y tiene un impacto mínimo en el tamaño de las clases existentes.

Ningún horario es la solución definitiva para el éxito de los estudiantes. Dicho esto, creemos que esta opción de horario nos ayudará a maximizar el impacto, específicamente para los grupos de estudiantes identificados como históricamente marginados.
