Dr. Dey shared the following message with the board and community following the events outside of Willagillespie Elementary School, Feburary 7, 2024:

Good evening, 

In lieu of my planned comments this evening, I am instead compelled to acknowledge unsettling events at Willagillespie Elementary this afternoon. 

After dismissal and the departure of our families. and most of our students, the staff at the building heard the one thing that no school is fully prepared to hear, gun fire outside their building. 

With expertise and calm the team swiftly responded by calling 911 and placing the building into lockdown. No one is can accurately predict how they will respond in an emergency situation such as this, but by all reports this team’s training went into effect as they navigated the incident admirably. 

Members of the WillaG team in partnership with our colleagues from the YMCA kept the students in their care calm and safe until law enforcement notified the building that they could move into a secure status and begin reunification with their waiting families. No one was physically injured.

District staff convened to prepare supports including additional substitutes to respond for the remainder of the week to allow for staff to step away and care for themselves and their colleagues as they process the moment. Trained counselors and staff jumped into action ensuring that care teams will be in place to help students navigate their feelings and reassuring them that their school is a safe place. 

Additionally, I cannot overstate our gratitude to our partners at Eugene Police whose swift response and location of the involved individuals put our minds at greater ease. 

While we are eternally grateful that no one was physically harmed, we recognize incidents such as this impacts the mental health of our students, staff and broader community. We are thankful for their physical safety, yet sad that our students grow up in an age where they are asked to prepare for and navigate situations such as these. 

Again, I express my gratitude to the staff, students and responders to this afternoon’s incident and my thanks to the community that has reached out to share their support.

En lugar de mis comentarios previstos para esta tarde, me veo obligado a reconocer los acontecimientos inquietantes ocurridos en la escuela primaria Willagillespie esta tarde.

Después del despido y la partida de nuestras familias. y la mayoría de nuestros estudiantes, el personal del edificio escuchó lo único que ninguna escuela está completamente preparada para escuchar: disparos afuera de su edificio.

Con experiencia y calma, el equipo respondió rápidamente llamando al 911 y bloqueando el edificio. Nadie puede predecir con precisión cómo responderán en una situación de emergencia como esta, pero según todos los informes, la capacitación de este equipo entró en vigor mientras lidiaban con el incidente admirablemente.

Los miembros del equipo de WillaG, en colaboración con nuestros colegas de la YMCA, mantuvieron a los estudiantes bajo su cuidado tranquilos y seguros hasta que las autoridades notificaron al edificio que podían pasar a un estado seguro y comenzar la reunificación con sus familias que esperaban. Nadie resultó herido físicamente.

Si bien estamos eternamente agradecidos de que nadie haya sufrido daños físicos, reconocemos que incidentes como este afectan la salud mental de nuestros estudiantes, el personal y la comunidad en general. Estamos agradecidos por su seguridad física, pero tristes de que nuestros estudiantes crezcan en una época en la que se les pide que se preparen y naveguen en situaciones como estas.

Nuevamente, expreso mi gratitud al personal, los estudiantes y el personal de respuesta al incidente de esta tarde y mi agradecimiento a la comunidad que se acercó para compartir su apoyo.
