Construction crews are hard at work building Eugene–Springfield area’s first new high school facility in more than 50 years
The new North Eugene High School is taking shape, on track to open in the fall of 2023.
The exterior walls of the 215,000-square-foot building are fully framed, and crews are cladding them with brick and installing windows. The roof of the two-story building is almost complete.
Inside, the new high school’s main and auxiliary gym as well as its career technical education classrooms are taking shape. Contractors are installing the building’s mechanical and ventilation systems, and have started to hang drywall in one portion of the building.
Outside, on the south side of Silver Lane, crews are working on sidewalks, curbs and landscaping. They also are putting in a new pedestrian walkway connecting the new high school to the area of the old building, ahead of major work this summer on the student parking lot north of the baseball stadium.
The North Eugene project’s construction manager and general contractor is Lease Crutcher Lewis. The new North was designed by Rowell Brokaw Architects and Opsis Architecture, with school and community feedback, to provide for safety and security, efficiency and sustainability, and 21st century learning including career technical education.
The new North Eugene is the first comprehensive high school to be built in the Eugene-Springfield area in the last half-century, and it will be a high-quality learning environment and community asset now and for generations to come.
At an estimated $135 million cost, the flagship high school building is the largest project included in the bond measure that local voters resoundingly approved in November 2018. Bond funds will be used for capital improvements for all 4J schools, including new buildings for North Eugene High School, Edison Elementary School and Camas Ridge Elementary School, expansion of Gilham Elementary School and other improvements across the district.
