Superintendent Andy Dey shared an optimistic start to the year grounded in collaboration and intentional supports for our schools.

Superintendent Comments – September 6, 2023

Good evening,

I am pleased to say, we have students back in our buildings and our school year is officially underway. Today our building doors opened and students transitioning in their K-12 education were welcomed to their new schools as our Kinder, 6th grade, and 9th grade students began their year. Tomorrow our buildings will once again be full of all of our students as the 2023-24 school year commences for all.

Having had the pleasure of visiting buildings, I was reminded how great it is to hear the sounds of teaching and learning and the beginnings of new relationships as tangible reminder as to why we all choose the field of education.  And to the Awbrey Park kindergartner who was super pumped to ride the bus tomorrow with your sister, I hope it is awesome. 

Our talented staff return this year with the highest ratio of students to adults in buildings we’ve experienced in quite some time. Unlike many districts in the state and across the country, I am pleased to report we begin this year with the fewer unfilled vacancies than we have had  in recent years. Thanks to all of the staff in Human Resources who are working hard to get positions filled and staff placed.  While we know our staffing scenario is possible in part due to temporary federal funding, those resources have made a substantial difference.

Additionally, our efforts at reorganization have intentionally focused key resources to direct building support. We have prioritized resources to provide support in buildings that we believe will lead to higher quality instructional practices. Further we have dedicated time and space for collaboration within building teamswith protected time on Wedensday’s early release .. 

Knowing there are challenges that we’ll face that there is a sense of optimism as we start the year that seems amplified when compared to the last several years.  Throughout the year, folks on staff and in the community will hear me speak of the need to work as a high functioning and unified team in service to students and families. Whether it is the team here at the dais, district administration, building, department, or grade level, one thing is certain, in order to deliver on our promises to students and families we will have to come together as a team. .

Public K12 education is equal parts challenging and rewarding, and while platitudes of positivity abound this time of year, I truly am looking forward to the work and the resulting growth our system and ultimately our students will experience.

El superintendente Andy Dey compartió un comienzo de año optimista basado en la colaboración y el apoyo intencional para nuestras escuelas.

Buenas tardes,

Me complace decir que tenemos estudiantes de regreso en nuestros edificios y nuestro año escolar está oficialmente en marcha. Hoy se abrieron las puertas de nuestros edificios y los estudiantes en transición en su educación K-12 fueron bienvenidos a sus nuevas escuelas cuando nuestros estudiantes de Kinder, 6to y 9no grado comenzaron su año. Mañana nuestros edificios volverán a estar llenos de todos nuestros estudiantes cuando comience el año escolar 2023-24 para todos.

Después de haber tenido el placer de visitar edificios, recordé lo maravilloso que es escuchar los sonidos de la enseñanza y el aprendizaje y el inicio de nuevas relaciones como recordatorio tangible de por qué todos elegimos el campo de la educación. Y para el niño de kindergarten de Awbrey Park que estaba súper emocionado de viajar en autobús mañana con su hermana, espero que sea increíble.

Nuestro talentoso personal regresa este año con la proporción más alta de estudiantes por adultos en edificios que hemos experimentado en bastante tiempo. A diferencia de muchos distritos en el estado y en todo el país, me complace informar que comenzamos este año con menos puestos vacantes que los que hemos tenido en los últimos años. Gracias a todo el personal de Recursos Humanos que está trabajando arduamente para cubrir puestos y ubicar personal. Si bien sabemos que nuestro escenario de dotación de personal es posible en parte gracias a la financiación federal temporal, esos recursos han marcado una diferencia sustancial.

Además, nuestros esfuerzos de reorganización han centrado intencionalmente recursos clave para dirigir el apoyo al edificio. Hemos priorizado recursos para brindar apoyo en edificios que creemos conducirán a prácticas de instrucción de mayor calidad. Además, hemos dedicado tiempo y espacio para la colaboración dentro de los equipos de creación con tiempo protegido en el lanzamiento anticipado del miércoles.

Sabiendo que hay desafíos que enfrentaremos, hay una sensación de optimismo al comenzar el año que parece amplificado en comparación con los últimos años. A lo largo del año, la gente del personal y de la comunidad me escucharán hablar de la necesidad de trabajar como un equipo unificado y de alto funcionamiento al servicio de los estudiantes y las familias. Ya sea el equipo aquí en el estrado, la administración del distrito, el edificio, el departamento o el nivel de grado, una cosa es segura: para cumplir nuestras promesas a los estudiantes y las familias, tendremos que unirnos como un equipo. 

La educación pública K12 es desafiante y gratificante a partes iguales, y aunque abundan los tópicos positivos en esta época del año, realmente espero con ansias el trabajo y el crecimiento resultante que experimentará nuestro sistema y, en última instancia, nuestros estudiantes.

Gracias a cada uno de ustedes, a los miembros de la junta directiva y a las muchas personas con las que me siento orgulloso de trabajar al servicio de nuestra comunidad.
