Major School Construction Projects

The bond funds will pay for four major school construction projects, three that are complete and a fourth that is nearly finished. Our district has opened two new school buildings, Edison Elementary School and North Eugene High School, and expanded Gilham Elementary School, 4J’s largest elementary school. The new Camas Ridge Elementary School will open in fall of 2024.

4J’s newest school building is blossooming at the corner of East 29th Avenue and Harris Street, with a scheduled opening in fall of 2024.

The two-story, 74,000-square-foot school replaces the original Camas Ridge building, which opened in 1949 as Harris Elementary School and, 60 years later, was officially renamed Camas Ridge Community School.

PIVOT Architecture of Eugene has designed a high-quality learning environment that is safe, welcoming and sustainable. The building’s design reflects feedback by community members to provide the school building a warmer and more welcoming appearance, with elements such as a brick exterior, a more natural looking color scheme with blue, green and red, and larger windows to allow in more natural light.

The new Camas Ridge Elementary School building is the last of the four major school construction projects funded by the 2018 bond measure.

New North Eugene High School Building

The new North Eugene High School building, the first such building opened in the Eugene-Springfield area in more than a half-century, reflects the decades of advancements in public education that have occurred since its predecessor opened in 1957.

In addition to nearly 50 general classrooms, the two-story school building has work spaces tailored for student support and career and technical education, including construction technology, digital arts and media, early childhood education and culinary arts. The 425-seat auditorium, library, and main and auxiliary gyms support student learning while also serving community uses.

The new, 216,000-square-foot high school is the largest of the three new 4J school buildings paid for by the bond measure.

"This magnificent, state-of-the-art high school symbolizes our community’s profound faith in the potential of our students and the dedication of our staff,” board member Maya Rabasa said at the grand opening ceremony.

The lights are definitely on at the new Edison Elementary School building, named after the inventor of the light bulb.

The new school replaces what had been 4J’s oldest existing building, nestled on a single city block in the South University neighborhood from 1926 until 2020, when it was torn down to make way for its successor.

The new Edison Elementary honors the legacy of the previous building, with its brick exterior and hallmark front entrance arch, while providing a modern and high-quality learning environment and community asset for generations to come.

Gilham Elementary School Expansion

front facade of new North Eugene High School building

4J's largest elementary school has grown with its students.

The expansion project provides Gilham with more classrooms, additional gym space and other upgrades so its growing student population has the space they need to learn and play. The expanded school features a new wing of four classrooms, renovated special education classrooms and security fencing around most of the school. The covered basketball court and play area at the north end of the school building was converted into an indoor auxiliary gym. A new covered play area was built on the southeast corner of the school grounds. A new digital readerboard also was installed.

Located in north Eugene, Gilham was built in 1965 and primarily serves students living in the neighborhoods north of Papé Beltline between the Willamette River and Game Farm Road. The school building was significantly expanded in 1994 with new classrooms and support spaces as well as a cafeteria, music room and gymnasium. A major renovation completed in 2016, with 2013 bond measure funds, renovated classrooms and the main office and added restrooms, additional spaces and upgraded safety features.
