Annual Asbestos Notification

IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT ASBESTOS IN SCHOOLS

June 1, 2025

This information is provided as partial fulfillment of Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA) rules requiring annual notification of workers and building occupants or their legal guardians of inspections, response actions, and post response action activities, including periodic

re-inspections and surveillance activities that are planned or in progress.

A periodic surveillance of asbestos containing materials is performed in all district buildings every six months. This is done to ensure that asbestos containing materials are maintained in good condition.

A complete re-inspection of all Eugene School District 4J buildings is currently in progress, and will occur every 3 years. The re-inspections are conducted by an AHERA Accredited Inspector. The results of the re-inspection will be included in the AHERA Management Plan. A copy of the AHERA Management Plan is available in the office of each School and at the Eugene School District Facilities Management Office located at 715 West 4th Street, Eugene, Oregon 97402.

Over the past year, the District has removed asbestos containing materials from the following areas due to maintenance and/or renovation activities:

  • Parker/Charlemagne - Flooring abatement in main offices and partial exterior CAB removal in support of CIP security upgrades
  • Spencer Butte - Remove and dispose of ~40 SF of asbestos containing ceiling joint compound in main office supply room
  • McCornack - Floor tile/mastic removal - hallways, custodial closet, staff room, restrooms
  • Twin Oaks - Floor tile abatement - classrooms 3, 6, 10, and custodial closet
  • Fox Hollow - Floor tile abatement - Main office staff restrooms, selective removal of tile in cafeteria
  • KRVM Building - Sheet floor abatement - KRVM restroom

The District continues to update and improve the AHERA Asbestos Management Plans. This work includes the sampling of materials that were originally assumed to contain asbestos. The improvements in the AHERA Asbestos Management Plans are intended to make them easier to use by District custodial and maintenance workers and outside contractors that perform work within district buildings.
