Lane Regional Inclusive Services

Lane Regional Inclusive services are a service of Lane Education Service District (Lane ESD).

For students with low-incidence disabilities, they provide:

  • Evaluation to determine eligibility under IDEA
  • Training for staff and families concerning assessment, program development, and interventions
  • Technical assistance
  • Access to media resources

Blind/Visually Impaired

Teachers for students who are visually impaired assist IEP/IFSP teams with:

  • Parent and infant developmental skills instruction
  • Braille instruction
  • Orientation and Mobility
  • Activities of daily living skill instruction
  • Low vision aids and equipment
  • Transition issues and related training

Adaptive or specialized equipment and materials are often needed. These may include:

  • Large print textbooks and materials
  • Braillewriters
  • Tape recorders and taped materials
  • Low vision aids
  • Computer adaptations and software
  • Travel aids
  • Developmental toys and games

Consultation to families, IEP/IFSP teams and other educational personnel include:

  • Technology access (appropriate equipment and low vision aid selection)
  • Inclusion strategies
  • Inservices on implications of visual impairments and blindness
  • Transition issues (kindergarten, vocational and career considerations)

Assessment of the child, student and/or educational setting includes:

  • Functional vision evaluation
  • Learning media assessment
  • Developmental, readiness, academic adaptive needs
  • Orientation and Mobility

Eligibility
Eligibility criteria for special education as a student with a visual impairment is stated in Oregon Administrative Rules. The Lane Regional Program will provide service to students who meet both the medical and educational needs criteria. The school team makes eligibility determination after reviewing the report of eye examination by a license ophthalmologist or optometrist, as well as assessments conducted by the resident school district and a Lane Regional Program teacher.

Deaf/Hard of Hearing

Serving students who are deaf and hard of hearing in Lane County

Lane Regional Program teachers work with students, parents, school staff and other community agencies to help provide accessible education for students who are deaf or hard of hearing in Lane County.

Our Beliefs:

  • Lane Regional Program accepts and values all forms of communication.
  • Lane Regional Program nurtures and respects the individuality and personal strengths of each student and recognizes self-esteem as being equally important as academic achievement.
  • All people invested in a student’s education share in the responsibility for addressing the needs of the student.

Direct Instruction centers around the unique communication needs of students who are deaf or hard of hearing and their development of language. This augments the instruction of regular classroom teachers. It may include:

  • Reading comprehension
  • Written language
  • Vocabulary and concept development
  • Speech and auditory training
  • Sign language
  • Self-advocacy training
  • Transition to community life/college

Technical assistance and consultation to students and staff might include use of:

  • Hearing aids
  • Assistive listening devices
  • Captioning
  • Augmentative communication
  • Alerting devices
  • Problem-solving accessibility and accommodation concerns

Interpreters

Students who use sign language are provided access to classroom instruction and school activities through the use of an interpreter. The Lane Regional Program’s interpreter coordinator works with districts and the program administrator to hire, schedule, evaluate interpreter skill levels, and provide in-services for interpreters. Information is provided for students, families and staff regarding interpreter services, their roles and professional ethics.
