Building is safe to reopen; gym roof is shored up and will be repaired next summer
Kelly Middle School and Yujin Gakuen Elementary School will welcome students back to school in-person this fall, after returning to distance learning in the spring. In May, the school building at 850 Howard had to close its doors for the last few weeks of the 2020–21 school year after the district discovered a gymnasium roof was unsafe.
Two roof trusses were found to be failing in the gymnasium known as the “inner gym,” one of three in the school building. When the issue was identified, the district alerted staff and families and shifted to distance learning in an abundance of caution for the safety of students and staff.
The district hired a structural engineer and contractor to stabilize the roof and develop a plan for permanent repairs. The facilities team quickly determined that the school building would need to remain closed through the end of the school year.
The gym roof has now been shored up and stabilized, and the building has engineers’ approval to reopen for regular use including the spaces around and adjacent to the gym. The inner gym will remain closed during the 2021–22 school year, and the truss replacement is planned to be completed in summer 2022.
As the school has three gymnasiums, unusual for a middle school building, Kelly Middle School and Yujin Gakuen Elementary School will each have a gym to use while the inner gym is off-limits.
The building also will have more space in the fall. Teacher staffing has been added, creating a need for more space. This spring, before the roof issue was discovered, the superintendent directed and began the process to add some modular classrooms to the school site. A two-classroom portable will be moved from another school site this fall. A second two-classroom portable is on order to be delivered later.
Summer programs are underway now and the schools will welcome students back to school in person on September 9 and 10.
