English Language Arts & Social Studies Curriculum

A new Language Arts and Social Studies curriculum for K-5 was adopted by the school board in the spring of 2022 and rolled out in schools during the 2022–23 school year.

ODE Definition: The ability to communicate well—to read, write, listen, and speak—prepares students for life. Language skills are essential tools not only because they serve as the necessary basis for further learning and career development but also because they enrich the human experience and foster responsible citizenship.

In 2007, all schools adopted a comprehensive textbook program for teaching the Oregon State English language arts standards. All of these programs provide explicit instruction in phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension. These five areas were identified by the Report of the National Reading Panel, (2000) as essential skill areas for reading instruction. These programs include writing process instruction.

Definición del ODE: La capacidad de comunicarse bien (leer, escribir, escuchar y hablar) prepara a los estudiantes para la vida. Todos estos programas proporcionan instrucción explícita en conciencia fonémica, fonética, fluidez, vocabulario y comprensión. Estas cinco áreas fueron identificadas por el Informe del Panel Nacional de Lectura, (2000) como áreas de habilidades esenciales para la instrucción de lectura. Estos programas incluyen instrucción del proceso de escritura.
