4J Staff Information

4J Staff Information

Everyone plays a vital role in the university student teacher placement process. Below are instructions for each type of 4J staff who will interact with our student teachers.

  • Every year, 4J licensed staff host over 300 university students from a variety of University Partners around the state and country. 4J staff members provide invaluable feedback for university students who gain hands-on experience and core concepts. Hosting a university student allows prospective educators, speech and language pathologists, school psychologists, and many others access to real-world classroom settings and unparalleled mentorship experiences. By preparing the next generation of Oregon's school staff, you will enhance their educational experience and career development.

If you are interested in becoming a cooperating teacher, please email HR Student Teachers for the application.

    After You’ve Been Approved

Once your application has been approved, your contact information is shared with our university partners. The university coordinators will contact you directly to arrange a placement. Under OAR 584-400-0145 subsection 13, the EPP is required to provide you with an understanding of their program and licensure requirements.

Here are some examples of critical information to ask about when contacted for a placement.

    1. Are you an approved 4J University Partner?

    2. What is the duration of the placement?

    3. Is there additional training that I will have to participate in?

    4. Is there compensation offered?

    5. If compensation is provided, when will it be sent to the district?

Take the time to connect with your university placement student before the placement begins. Understanding their experience and providing support will significantly impact their journey. Make them feel at ease by giving them a tour of your building. Ensure you introduce them to your colleagues and clarify their roles and responsibilities. Reflect on what you would have appreciated knowing at the start of your student teaching experience. A considerate onboarding process can set the stage for a successful experience.

Lastly, contact Human Resources Student Teachers with any feedback including questions and clarification. Please reach out at any point during the school year or placement process for support. We are here to help support you through challenges and concerns.

    Teacher and Student Technology

If a Category 2 student needs access to 4J systems, it's important that they request it themselves.

You may not share passwords or grant access to programs for your student teacher under your own login. Student teachers are required to use their District-provided teachnology and login information for all platforms and devices. This is a vital protection for our legal compliance regarding protected information safety.

Thank you for your cooperation in maintaining system security and integrity.

The detailed category descriptions of student teachers can be referenced here. This will assist you in identifying category 1 vs category 2 students.

  • As the university placement begins, it's important to ensure that all internal processes have been followed before the start of the placement. This is vital for maintaining security.

    • Please take the time to connect with the building secretary, cooperating teacher, and the student teacher/intern before and throughout the placement to verify who should have access to your building. This should be verified every semester to ensure the safety of our students and sites.
    • Anyone who isn’t on the approved list cannot begin their program and should be redirected to HR Student Teachers.
    • If anyone other than you, the building administrator, is going to be HR’s point of contact for confirming verified student teachers, please communicate that to the HR Student Teachers team.
    • You should have access to the Approved Student Teacher List to aid in this task.

Checking in on the student teacher/intern’s experience and providing support as needed will make a big difference. Remember that providing support to cooperating teachers is equally important.

Finally, don't hesitate to contact Human Resources Student Teachers or Chemika Bolden with any questions, concerns, or positive feedback you would like to share.

Category 1 university placement students are required to sign in and out of the building daily. When they sign into the building, they should check in as volunteers rather than visitors. The printed badge from Raptor must be worn while they are in the building. If they cannot log in as volunteers, please verify that they have been cleared to start. They are required to have completed SafeSchools trainings.

Category 2 university placement students should have requested a 4J ID badge be sent to your school before beginning their placement. If you have not received their badge by the beginning of their placement, they should follow the same sign-in process as the Category 1 students and follow-up by connecting with HR Student Teachers. They are required to have completed the staff SafeSchools trainings.
