Work begins in earnest on the interior
The bricks are falling into place at the new Edison Elementary School as the construction crew continues work on the exterior and interior of the new building. Over the summer, the workers erected the steel “skeleton” of the new building and poured slabs of concrete for the second floor. This paved the way for work to begin in earnest on the interior of the building. While workers installed the roof decking and weatherproofed substrate for the exterior walls, other construction teams framed the rooms throughout the first floor.
Now with the DensGlass-mat sheathing and rain barrier in place on most exterior walls, the team will be able to focus on delicate interior work this fall and winter without fear of a soggy interior. The sheathing and the rain barrier will help keep things dry during Oregon’s notorious wet winter and will contribute to the building’s energy efficiency by eliminating drafts and leaks. This keeps the building cool in the summer and warm in the winter with efficient energy use.
Another key feature being set in place on the outside is the new brick siding. Over the next few weeks, skilled masons will be laying the bricks that will eventually cover two-thirds of the exterior walls. This pays homage to the previous school building while giving the building its own unique look that will fit beautifully into the neighborhood.
While the exterior work continues, the interior is starting to heat up. The rooms on the first floor and most of the second have been framed up and are starting to show the layout of the new building’s interior. In addition to framing the different rooms and spaces in the building, workers are completing the mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire rough-ins on the first floor with the second floor following suit. Once the rough-in work is completed, then the next phase of construction on the interior spaces can progress.
The following is a collection of photos from July to October, showcasing the hard work of the construction crews as they continue to build the new Edison Elementary School.
The new Edison building is on schedule to be completed and open in fall 2022.
Voters in Eugene School District 4J resoundingly passed the school bond measure in November 2018 to fund capital improvements for 4J schools. In addition to constructing a new building for Edison Elementary School, bond funds will be used to construct new school buildings for North Eugene High School and Camas Ridge Elementary School, expand Gilham Elementary School, and make other capital improvements across the district. Every school will benefit.

Mientras el trabajo exterior continúa, el interior empieza a calentarse.
Los salones de clase del primer piso y la mayoría de los del segundo piso se han enmarcado y empiezan a mostrar el diseño interior del nuevo edificio. Además del enmarcado de los diferentes salones y espacios del edificio, otros trabajadores están en la fase de instalaciones (MEP) de sistemas contra incendios, ductos de ventilación (HVAC) y tuberías de alambrado eléctrico y plomería en el primer piso para luego continuar con el segundo piso. Una vez que esta fase sea completada, se podrá progresar con la siguiente fase de construcción en los espacios interiores.
Debido al pequeño tamaño del lote de la escuela, los maestros y estudiantes de la Edison están sosteniendo sus clases en el sitio de la escuela Willard en la 29th y Lincoln por el resto del año durante la construcción. Una vez que el edificio de la Edison sea inaugurado en otoño de 2022 la Escuela Primaria Camas Ridge ocupará la escuela provisional por dos años mientras se construye el nuevo edificio para la Camas Ridge.
Los votantes del Distrito escolar de Eugene 4J rotundamente aprobaron la medida del bono escolar en noviembre del 2018 para financiar las mejoras capitales de las escuelas de 4J. Además de la construcción del nuevo edificio para la Primaria Edison, los fondos del bono serán usados para construir nuevos edificios para la Preparatoria North Eugene y la Primaria Camas Ridge, y para expandir la Primaria Gilham, y hacer otras mejoras capitales a través del distrito.
