Equity. Excellence. Innovation.

How New Name Will Be Chosen?

How New Name Will Be Chosen?

The process has several stages:

  1. Listen and generate ideas. The entire community will be invited to nominate potential names and share what the future name should represent.
  2. Center student voice. Chávez students will participate in age-appropriate activities about school identity, belonging, pride, values, and hopes for their school.
  3. Screen and research potential names. The Renaming Advisory Committee will apply the same published criteria to viable nominations and complete required historical, cultural, Tribal, and other due diligence before a name can become a finalist.
  4. Invite community review of finalists. The district will publish 3–5 certified finalists with the same type of neutral information for each option. The broader community will be invited to identify strengths, concerns, and information the committee should consider.
  5. Center the final Chávez community preference. The committee will identify 2–3 final names. Current Chávez families and staff will participate in a ranked preference process, and students will participate through a separate age-appropriate preference activity.
  6. Develop a recommendation. The Advisory Committee will review the complete record, including community input, student voice, final preference results, Policy FF criteria, due diligence, cultural considerations, and implementation considerations. The Superintendent will determine the recommendation forwarded to the Board.
  7. Board consideration and final decision. The Board will receive the recommendation at First Read, provide an opportunity for public testimony and consideration, and take final action.

How Will Community Input Be Used

Every idea and every voice matters in this process. The nomination period is an opportunity for our community to share names, stories, connections, and ideas about what the future name of the school could represent.

Rather than counting how many times a particular name is submitted, the Renaming Advisory Committee will thoughtfully consider each viable name using the same published criteria and review process. This helps ensure that ideas are considered fairly and that the meaning, history, cultural significance, and connection behind each name are carefully understood.

Later in the process, current Chávez families and staff will be invited to share their preferences among the final names, and students will have their own age-appropriate opportunity to participate. Those preferences will be an important part of the recommendation, together with student voice, community feedback, the naming criteria, and the research completed on each name.

The Board of Directors will make the final decision, informed by the community engagement and careful review that takes place throughout its process as outlined as follows:

December 16, 2026 — Board First Read
Administration will present the proposed name, Policy FF alignment, engagement record, preference results, due diligence, and preliminary implementation/fiscal information. No final action is scheduled at First Read.

January 20, 2027 — Public Testimony & Board Consideration
The community will have an opportunity to provide testimony. Administration will respond to questions and provide any requested supplemental information.

February 3, 2027 — Final Board Approval
The Board is scheduled to take final action. If a new name is approved, the district will begin the transition and implementation process.
