Eugene School District 4J's ongoing funding shortage is driving a major outreach to families this year around student technology use in classrooms.

The school district has always fully covered the cost of student technology device repair and replacement. Costs for this have skyrocketed since 2020 when all students have been issued devices, and with district financial reserves depleted, 4J will run out of money for this expense early this fall. Educators are asking parents and students to be aware of, and help reinforce, the proper care of devices so that repair and replacement is needed less. 

This fall, schools are sending home technology use agreements for all parents to read and sign, to make them aware of how these tools are used in instruction and the expectations for students to care for them. 

"We can't immediately shift our instructional model to only using shared devices in the classroom," Superintendent Miriam Mickelson said. "Since we will need to continue supplying students during this year, we have no option but to continue repair and replacement as needed. But every dollar the district can save on tech repair matters when we are looking at more budget cuts."
