On Wednesday, May 25, the school board held a special meeting. The session was open to the public via live video on Zoom, live audio stream, and radio broadcast on KRVM 1280-AM and 98.7-FM.

Board Chair Judy Newman started the meeting by reading a short statement expressing condolences to the family members of the victims of the mass shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, that killed 19 children and two teachers, as well two other recent mass shootings targeted against communities of color in Buffalo, New York, and Orange County, California. She urged that the nation needed to come together and figure out a way to stop the violence. The board held a minute of silence to remember and honor the lives of those killed in the attacks. Items for Action
• Superintendent contract parameters: The board reviewed a draft of the employment contract to be negotiated with the board’s preferred candidate for the permanent superintendency. The board agreed on the general terms of a draft contract after a lengthy discussion that focused on the contract term, compensation and termination clauses. (Video link)
• North Region Planning Committee membership: The board discussed the membership of a committee that will be convened to advise the board and superintendent on the physical facility, programmatic and organizational needs of Yujin Gakuen Japanese Immersion Elementary School and Kelly Middle School. The two schools are now housed in the same building on Howard Avenue.
The initial proposed roster of the committee was 10 people from the school community—an administrator, two staff members and two parents from each school—along with two board members and the superintendent and/or superintendent’s representative. The board decided to also add four students to the committee.
This is an advisory committee; the superintendent and board are the only parties with decision-making authority. Meetings will be open to the public and noticed in advance. The vote was unanimous. (Video link)
