School Board Regular Meeting
On Wednesday, August 17, the school board held a regular meeting. The session was open to the public via live video on Zoom, live audio stream, and radio broadcast on KRVM 1280-AM and 98.7-FM.
Superintendent Andy Dey discussed back-to-school preparations, the pending arrival of the 2022–23 District Handbook to 4J families’ mailboxes in English and Spanish, and the update to 4J’s COVID-19 Communicable Disease Management Plan. He also talked about the labor shortage at 4J for certain positions, including bus drivers and groundskeepers (watch). Later in the meeting, the board approved agreements to provide wage increases and bonuses to transportation employees as well as bonuses to groundskeepers during the current school year to help with employee recruitment and retention for those positions
Board Chair Maya Rabasa thanked all staff involved in 4J’s summer learning and enrichment programs and shared an update on a board subcommittee’s work related to student mental health and providing more student voice during school board meetings. She also praised the hard work of staff to prepare for the new school year (watch).
• Reviewed a report listing which 4J staff are issued credit cards (watch): Board policy requires that the superintendent annually present board members with information on the credit cards issued to officers and designated staff for district purchases and authorized travel.
• Approved items on the consent agenda (watch): The board approved the classroom merger and name change for Looking Glass, corrected the amount of a tax levied in the recently adopted budget, approved agreements with the labor union representing classified employees related to compensation for transportation employees and groundskeepers. It also approved the renewal of the athletic apparel contract with Nike, as well as the official meeting minutes for the June 28 and August 3 board meetings. The vote was unanimous.
• Approved the dates for the annual board retreat (watch): The board typically holds their retreat in late summer or early fall of each new school year to discuss board goals and initiatives. Board members approved holding the retreat on two separate dates from 4–8 p.m. on September 6 and October 24. The vote was unanimous.
• Considered changes to board policies (watch): The board considered changes to board policies related to immunization, physical examination, vision screening and eye examination, and dental screening. The changes being considered are recommended to better align with existing rules and best practice for enrolling students.
• Considered the process for selecting student board representatives and for including student voice at board meetings (watch): Board Chair Maya Rabasa provided an update on the work by a board subcommittee to improve student health mental and provide more student voice during school board meetings. The subcommittee will present a recommendation to the full board during its next meeting.
The board heard live public comment virtually via Zoom (watch). Four people spoke school start times, summer programs, test scores and sex education. To request to provide public comment to the school board, community members may complete an online request form by the Monday before the next regular board meeting. Community members also may send comments via email to board@4j.lane.edu.
