School Board Regular Meeting
On Wednesday, August 3, the school board held a regular meeting. The session was open to the public via live video on Zoom, live audio stream, and radio broadcast on KRVM 1280-AM and 98.7-FM.
Opening his first school board meeting as 4J’s new chief executive, Superintendent Andy Dey outlined his three top priorities: ensuring a coordinated focus on equitable outcomes and experiences for all 4J students, particularly those from traditionally underserved populations; providing timely communications and meaningful community engagement; and attending to the safety and well-being of all students and staff (watch). He also discussed planning for the new school year that starts next month and invited participation in his upcoming one-on-one conversations.
Board Chair Maya Rabasa, in her first meeting as the board’s top officer, welcomed Dey as 4J’s new superintendent and outlined her hopes for how the board can work together in the coming year as it strives to achieve its adopted goals (watch).
• Reviewed board committee assignments (watch): Each year, the board chair assigns board members to various committees. Board Chair Maya Rabasa reviewed and finalized her assignments with board members for the 2022–23 school year.
• Approved items on the consent agenda (watch): The board approved the following: an agreement related to substitute teachers with 4J’s labor union representing teacher and licensed specialists; routine personnel actions; and the implementation of salad bars at 4J’s middle and high schools. It also approved the official minutes of the June 16, June 22 and June 29 board meetings. The vote was unanimous.
• Approved the resolution of a complaint (watch): The board voted to dismiss a complaint against a board member filed on May 12, concluding the evidence didn’t substantiate the complaint. A motion by board member Judy Newman for the board to reconsider the complaint in another executive, or nonpublic, session failed on 2-4 vote. Newman and Alicia Hays voted yes, and Maya Rabasa, Gordon Lafer, Keerti Haiji Kauffman and Michelle Hsu voted no. The board then voted to dismiss the complaint on a 4-2 vote. Rabasa, Lafer, Haiji Kauffman and Hsu voted yes, and Hays and Newman voted no. The complainant will be notified of the decision.
• Considered a proposed board resolution concerning protective measures to ensure safe public meetings (watch): Superintendent Dey provided board members with information on a draft resolution to ensure that the board’s in-person public meetings are held in a manner that that is healthy and safe for community members, students, staff and school board. The board will consider approval of the draft resolution at a future meeting.
• Discussed a date for the board’s annual board retreat (watch): The board typically holds their retreat in late summer or early fall of each new school year to discuss board goals and initiatives. Board members agreed to meet in-person for four hours on two separate days. Board Chair Maya Rabasa will propose specific dates for approval at a future meeting.
The board heard live public comment virtually via Zoom (watch). Two people spoke about wages for 4J’s classified staff and the board’s relationship with its constituency. To request to provide public comment to the school board, community members may complete an online request form by the Monday before the next regular board meeting. Community members also may send comments via email to board@4j.lane.edu.
